Vermont's most metropolitan area is not exactly what you'd think it would be. Overlooking the waters of Lake Champlain toward upstate New York and the peaks of the Adirondacks, Burlington has rightly gained a reputation as a great outdoor getaway. There are swimming, water skiing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and water sports on Lake Champlain; a seven-mile bike and hiking path on the shoreline and dozens of prospects for hiking,snow skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing in the nearby Green Mountains.
Like most of Vermont, Burlington has quaint New England scenery, featuring rolling, wooded hills (breathtaking in the fall) dotted with white clapboard homes and tall-steepled churches.
No less than five colleges, including the University of Vermont, are located here, and with them (and the weekenders and transplants from large East Coast cities) comes a steady diet of very sophisticated visual, performing and fine arts: there is the Fleming Museum for fine arts, the Flynn Theatre which offers everything from contemporary dance and jazz to Broadway favorites, dozens of galleries and various festivals, such as the Mozart Festival and the Discover Jazz Festival.
History buffs can spend hours investigating the Native American, French and British heritage of the area and viewing such sites as Battery Park, which played a crucial part in the War of 1812. Other sites of historical interest include the Battery Street National Historic District, the Ethan Allen Homestead, the Green Mountain Cemetery and various monuments around town.
Lake Champlain Ferries offers three ferry crossings between Vermont and New York, along with a variety of excursion cruises. Crossings are between Grand Isle, VT and Plattsburgh, NY; Burlington VT and Port Kent, NY and Charlotte VT and Essex, NY.

A Burlington man who was shot in the back by police is facing more charges. Prosecutors have brought eight counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, and DUI charges against Kelley O'Brien.
