GUIDES TO THE NATION'S RESTAURANTS
The guides listed were chosen for content, and not quantity of listings. We also included guides with specific interests. Lastly, we avoided many of the larger guides that are paid listings with little real content. The guides are listed in order of overall usefulness.
- Zagat's
Survey - Restaurant reviews
by and for the people. One of the
best-known and used guides, because
it uses a survey of residents and
visitors. It has become a subscription
service.
- Chowhound -
A restaurant review site with attitude,
devoted to finding the best food, not
the most expensive or trendy. This
site is actually a message board, not
a guide per se, so it can take some
patience, but the info is there.
- Guide to Distinguished Restaurants of North America - A non-profit, independent and anonymous restaurant inspection program presents awards of merit, using a strict guideline. Their choices are usually expensive, and sometimes stuffy, but the food is always good. The guide is light on visitor reviews.
- Gourmet
Magazine's 2005 Restaurant Guide -
Get a foodie point of view on the
best and trendiest in the country's
most well traveled cities.
- Road Food - Jane and Michael Stern travel the country and report on the best restaurants you never heard of. They are also columnists for Gourmet magazine and a regular feature on NPR's cooking show, The Splendid Table.
- Dine.com
Lots of places listed, with reviews for restaurans in the larger cities. Reviews are written by Every Man, so just remember, one man's great dining experience is another man's swill.
SPECIALTY GUIDES
- Veg Eats! - An extensive list of links for vegetarian restaurants, by country and city.
- Happy Cow - A vegetarian guide to restaurants and groceries....sort of. Some groceries mentioned, like the Wild Oats chain, do sell meats as well as organic produce and meat replacements.
- Kosher Dine -A guide to kosher restaurants and markets all over the world.
- Sushi Worldguide - If you are traveling and develop a sushi jones, this is the site you'll need.
- Dixie Dining - For those interested in finding restaurants that serve down-home Southern cooking, this is the site to search.
RESERVATIONS AND DEALS
- Dine 4 Less - Choose your city, find a coupon. This site lists hot linked restaurants that offer deals or coupons (e.g. print this offer and take in for 20% off dinner.)
- Dinnerbroker.com - book guaranteed reservations for even the most sought-after restaurants . Two types of guarantee: premium, for "peak demand tables" (these will cost you $30 to book) and discount.
- Opentable.com - Your credit card number is used to secure reservations, but it is not billed. Four no-shows and you are banned; earn discounts with bookings.
- Ebay and Restaurant.com
These two sites are working together to offer restaurant gift certificates on auction, that are sent via e-mail, so the day the auction closes is the day you receive the certificate.
