City of Cumberland - the seed that grew into Cumberland was planted in October 1749 when Christopher Gist, agent for the Ohio Company (land and trading) arrived at the junction of Wills Creek and the North Branch of the Potomac to erect a stockade and trading post. Under threat of the conflict that led to the French and Indian War, it was developed into a fort, named Fort Cumberland (after the Duke of Cumberland, son of George 11 and head of the British Army) by General Braddock when he arrived here in May 1755. The city took the name of its historic fort in 1787, after being known for several years as ""Washington Town"".
