St. Francisville perched high on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi, St. Francisville became one of the most prosperous cotton towns in Louisiana in the 1800s. The town of Bayou Sara, directly below the bluffs, was one of the most important ports on the Mississippi between New Orleans and Memphis and provided access to goods and services. Today, St. Francisville and the other towns of West Feliciana parish have many vestiges of the plantations of that era, and it is a great destination for visitors wanting to see how life in this part of Louisiana was lived during that time. There are also several places and events that commemorate John Audubon, who lived in the area.
