Wichita, the largest city in the state of Kansas, is bisected by the Arkansas River (pronounced Ar-KAN-sas there) and has a varied history of being at one time a cattle town, and at another, the "Air Capital of the World," (due to the fact that aircraft companies, such as Beech and Cessna, were started here). There are many things for a visitor to do and see in this bustling midsize city; take a walk or ride a bike in the riverside parks, explore the gardens at Botanica or tour one of Frank Lloyd Wright's self proclaimed best works. Other popular attractions in Wichita include the Sedgewick County Zoo and Cowtown, a recreation of life in the 1800s. The Museum of World Treasures, located in the popular downtown warehouse district known as Old Town, has many natural and historical wonders on display, including "Ivan", the world's most complete T-Rex skeleton. One of the most popular annual sporting events is the National Baseball Congress World Series, in which collegiate teams battle for the championship. Many of the sport's most talented players have played in this competition, including Satchel Paige and Barry Bonds.
Old Town is an historic area of buildings downtown, built between 1870 and 1930 that now house boutique shops, cafés, theaters, art galleries, stores, restaurants and clubs. A large very popular farmers' market is also located in Old Town, and is open from May through October.
