deep in this southwestern corner of Georgia, Bainbridge has managed to preserve the history of the area, Decatur County. It has all the physical characteristics of the classic Southern town; Willis Park, an attractive town square with lazy fountains stands under large oaks draped with Spanish moss and plays host to summer concerts. The Flint River meanders along the edge of town and flows into Lake Seminole. Classic Victorian homes line Shotwell St., within the downtown historic district. Originally occupied by the Seminoles, the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto claimed the area for Spain in 1540. Throughout the 1700s and into the 1800s, the area was beset by battles with the Seminoles, as the waterways of the Chattahoochee, Flint and Apalachicola Rivers were important to developing trade routes. Once the battles ended, river traffic and later mining became the lifeblood of the area. These days, tourism is the driving factor to the economy, as Lake Seminole, the fifth best bass fishing lake in the country, draws thousands of anglers and boaters each year to its spectacular clear waters.
