Founded by Harry Jacobs in 1954, the Augusta Symphony began as a ""pick-up"" group of fifteen musicians who came together to provide musical support for a traveling road show of South Pacific. First called The Augusta Civic Orchestra, the group made its debut on May 23, 1954, with soprano Sophie Wolski and fifty musicians. A full concert series was instituted in the 1955-56 season.
