first settled by the Native American tribes of the Quechans, the Cocopahs and the Mohaves, and later by the Spanish, Yuma has a rich and varied cultural history. Situated along the banks of the Colorado River just north of Mexico and on the eastern border of California, it was chosen as the site for an army outpost, Fort Yuma in 1849, which was essential to the protection of settlers living and traveling through the area. Later, steamboats made their way along the Colorado from the Gulf of California, and later the railroad came through the town delivering goods and travelers to this area just north of the Mexican border. Today, Yuma is a prospering town due to its temperate climate which mixes the clean, dry air of the desert with the cool breezes from the Colorado River. With many different scenic choices nearby, from the rugged Kofa and Castle Dome Mountain Ranges to the wetlands of the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge to the stark sands of the California Imperial Dunes, there is plenty of natural beauty to keep residents as well as visitors charmed by this town. And where there is great scenery, great recreation usually follows. Yuma is known nationwide for its diverse courses, and the nearby river, mountains and lakes provide boating, rafting, camping, hiking and hunting opportunities.
