this unassuming Arizona town was once known as the Cattle Capital of the West, because it produced more beef than any other town in the country. Today it is one of the more prolific apple growing towns, and there are many orchards where visitors are allowed to pick their own fruit. The natural beauty of this part of Arizona is especially evident in the unique rock formations of the Chiricahua National Monument, Cochise Stronghold, and the almost haunting desolation of the Willcox Playa bird habitat. Much of the history of the Old West was played out here, or in surrounding areas of Cochise County, where fierce armies of Chiricahua Apaches led by legendary Chiefs Cochise and Geronimo refused to be chased off of their homelands by the U.S. Army. It was a battle that was to last some 25 years. Evidence of this struggle between native and settling peoples can be seen at Fort Bowie National Historic Site, the Cochise Stronghold in the Coronado National Forest, and the Chiricahua Regional Museum and Research Center. Other cultural sites that reflect happier times include the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Rex Allen Museum. Cochise County - public services and governmental department contacts and information.
